At the Letcher County, KY, Johnson Law Firm, founded by Billy Johnson in 1998, our personal injury lawyers have helped countless individuals in Eastern Kentucky and across the state whose lives have been affected by the negligent actions of others.

Named after a former governor, Letcher County was carved out in 1842 from Harlan and Perry counties. As part of the Eastern Coal Field region, many of its towns began as mining camps, including Fleming, Jenkins, and McRoberts. The filming of miners’ living conditions in the 1960s led to the killing of a television journalist in Jeremiah, an event that still stirs strong feelings today among locals and was the subject of the award-winning 2000 documentary, “Stranger with a Camera.”

Base of operations for both Appalshop media-center and The Mountain Eagle newspaper, the county seat of Whitesburg is one of only two “wet” cities in the county. Once home to a community of Italian stonemasons, the city and surrounding areas feature remnants of that influence through numerous cut-stone retaining walls, bridges, foundations, and buildings. Among other events, Whitesburg hosts Seedtime on the Cumberland in June, Riverside Days in August, and the Mountain Heritage Festival in September. The largest custom and antique car show in the state, the Heritage 2KX Minitruck Show, is another fall ritual.

For those who want to get outdoors, Letcher County boasts the Pioneer Horse Trail, the Historic Scuttlehole Gap Wagon Road, the Little Shepherd Trail, Kingdom Come State Park, Bad Branch Falls, the Lilley Cornett Woods, and even part of the Jefferson National Forest. Pine Mountain State Scenic Trail is one way visitors can enjoy Pine Mountain, the second highest peak in Kentucky.

With some of the most beautiful scenic overlooks in the state, there’s a lot to love about Letcher County. Whether you are a resident or are just passing through, it’s our goal at the Johnson Law Firm to help you enjoy the area safely and to protect your rights if someone has harmed you.
